The Latino Opportunity

You might have heard that this is Hispanic Heritage Month—a celebration of the culture and traditions of Americans who trace their roots to Spain and the Spanish-speaking nations of Latin America. But, even as we come to the end of this celebration, we should understand how their dynamic growth and particular demographic characteristics make Latinos an increasingly important segment of the U.S. population—and how serving this community represents exciting opportunities for eyecare professionals.

I recently read that the number of nurses (and all health professionals) who smoke has declined. It got me thinking about what messages we send our patients through our own healthy (or unhealthy) habits. While I’m pleased to see this statistic decreasing, it’s still disconcerting to observe fellow health professionals make ill-advised decisions for their own health. I’m talking about the trauma surgeon who rides a motorcycle without a helmet, the dentist who rarely flosses, or the dietician who consumes excessive junk food.
