Understanding the Role of Culture to Provide Optimal Eye Care

I recently returned from a trip to Myanmar and Bhutan, where I had the opportunity to visit some local hospitals and medical facilities. While traveling out of the country is always a great way to explore new environments and become immersed in different cultures, it is also an important reminder that the beliefs and values held by the locals – including their views on health care – are not entirely unlike the views of those who live in the United States, but are foreign-born or who belong to a specific ethnic group. In fact, many of our nation’s largest cities are becoming home to several of the world’s most unique populations and cultures.

You might have heard that this is Hispanic Heritage Month—a celebration of the culture and traditions of Americans who trace their roots to Spain and the Spanish-speaking nations of Latin America. But, even as we come to the end of this celebration, we should understand how their dynamic growth and particular demographic characteristics make Latinos an increasingly important segment of the U.S. population—and how serving this community represents exciting opportunities for eyecare professionals.

With so many overall health issues having ocular side effects, collaboration with eyecare professionals is imperative.
